High Myopia Progressive Glasses with Kaneko Optical Clip-On Sunglasses in Seoul, Korea
For people with high myopia, choosing the right eyeglass frame is about much more than appearance. Lens thickness, weight, frame size, and accurate optical alignment all play important roles in how comfortable the finished glasses will be.
When progressive lenses are involved, the fitting process becomes even more important.
Today, we are introducing a pair of high-prescription progressive glasses made at EYEDAQ Optical in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Our customer, a long-time client who traveled from Cheongju, South Korea, brought in a Kaneko Optical vintage frame purchased elsewhere.
The frame features a detachable blue-tinted sunglass clip, allowing the wearer to switch between regular prescription glasses and sunglasses without purchasing a separate pair of prescription sunglasses.
Kaneko Optical Vintage Frame – Classic Japanese Eyewear
Kaneko Optical is a Japanese eyewear brand known for its traditional craftsmanship and vintage-inspired designs.
This particular frame features a slightly oval-shaped round design with an attractive combination of black and gold.
The black rims provide a defined outline, while the gold-colored metal bridge, hinges, and other details create a classic appearance.
The adjustable nose pads also allow the frame to be fitted to different nose shapes within the limits of its design.
Frame dimensions:
Lens width: 45 mm
Bridge width: 22 mm
Temple length: 145 mm
The relatively small 45 mm lens width can be advantageous for high-myopia prescriptions.
Minus lenses are generally thinner in the center and thicker toward the edges. A smaller frame can help reduce edge thickness, depending on the wearer's pupillary distance and lens positioning.
However, a small frame does not automatically guarantee thinner lenses.
The 22 mm bridge width must also be considered because it affects the relationship between the frame's geometric centers and the wearer's pupils.
This is why frame selection should always involve more than choosing a fashionable design.
Progressive Lenses for High Myopia: Over -9.00 Diopters
The prescription for this customer was:
Right eye (OD): SPH -9.00 / CYL -1.00
Left eye (OS): SPH -9.25 / CYL -0.50
Near addition (ADD): +2.25
Both eyes have a high degree of myopia, combined with astigmatism.
The +2.25 addition provides extra optical power for near vision through the progressive lens design.
Progressive lenses are designed to provide a gradual change in optical power for distance, intermediate, and near vision.
For high-myopia prescriptions, several factors deserve particular attention.
The position of the optical zones, fitting height, pantoscopic tilt, and vertex distance can all influence the visual experience.
With stronger prescriptions, changes in the position of the glasses may have a more noticeable effect on vision.
Accurate measurements, suitable lens design, and careful fitting are therefore essential considerations.
At EYEDAQ Optical, we believe that the quality of prescription glasses depends not only on the lenses themselves but also on how well the finished glasses suit the individual wearer.
Blue Clip-On Sunglasses – One Frame, Two Functions
One of the most distinctive features of these Kaneko Optical glasses is the detachable blue sunglass clip.
The clip has a thin gold-colored metal structure that complements the original frame.
Without the clip, the glasses have a subtle, vintage appearance. Once the blue lenses are attached, they take on a more distinctive sunglass style.
This system can be particularly practical for people with high-myopia progressive prescriptions.
A separate pair of prescription progressive sunglasses can involve considerable additional expense, depending on the lens design and specifications.
With clip-on sunglasses, the wearer can continue using the same progressive prescription glasses while adding tinted lenses when needed outdoors.
However, clip-on sunglasses also have limitations.
They add some weight to the frame, and reflections may occur between the prescription lenses and the sunglass clip. Proper attachment and careful handling are important to avoid damaging the frame or lenses.
It is also important to remember that lens color alone does not indicate UV protection. The UV-blocking performance of the sunglass clip should be verified separately.
Why Frame Selection Matters for High-Prescription Glasses
Many customers naturally choose frames based on appearance.
However, with prescriptions stronger than -9.00 diopters, frame dimensions and fitting characteristics become especially important.
A frame that looks attractive may not necessarily be the best choice for minimizing lens thickness or achieving a comfortable fit.
Before making high-myopia glasses, we consider the relationship between frame size, pupillary distance, lens thickness, and the wearer's facial features.
For progressive lenses, sufficient vertical space is also necessary to accommodate the selected progressive design.
Even a premium frame cannot compensate for an unsuitable lens design or inaccurate fitting.
The goal is to find a balance between appearance, optical performance, and everyday comfort.

Our customer traveled from Cheongju to Myeongdong for this pair of glasses, bringing a Kaneko Optical frame with a blue sunglass clip.
This case illustrates an important point: good prescription eyewear is not simply about inserting lenses into a frame.
The frame, prescription, lens design, and fitting must all be considered together.
