Oakley HSTN Prescription Sunglasses – Customized for Cycling and Everyday Wear
Not all sports sunglasses need to have a professional racing design.
People enjoy cycling in different ways. Some focus on speed and performance, while others prefer exploring the city or traveling with a folding bicycle.
For recreational cyclists, sunglasses that complement everyday clothing can be just as appealing as specialized sports eyewear.
At EYEDAQ Optical in Myeongdong, Seoul, we recently customized a pair of Oakley HSTN sunglasses with prescription lenses.
The customer wanted sunglasses suitable for both recreational cycling on a folding bicycle and everyday use. We selected individually customized curved prescription lenses to meet these requirements.
Oakley HSTN – A Distinctive Combination of Sport and Lifestyle Design
The Oakley HSTN combines elements of Oakley's sporting heritage with contemporary lifestyle eyewear design.
Its lenses have a predominantly rounded shape, while the angular upper frame creates a distinctive appearance compared with conventional round sunglasses.
The frame features a two-tone design, combining a dark translucent brown upper section with a transparent amber-yellow lower section.
The temple design is particularly distinctive.
Decorative Oakley emblems appear near the front of the temples, while the rear sections feature an unusual angular shape.
Inspired by Oakley's earlier sports eyewear, these details give the HSTN an identity that sets it apart from conventional lifestyle sunglasses.
Its distinctive appearance also makes it suitable for casual clothing and everyday activities.
However, the unique temple design means that fitting may vary depending on facial width, head shape, and ear position. We recommend checking the fit carefully before purchasing.
Why We Selected Custom Curved Prescription Lenses
The customer's prescription was as follows:
Right Eye (OD): SPH -0.25 / CYL -0.75
Left Eye (OS): SPH -0.50 / CYL -0.75
Although the degree of myopia is relatively mild, both eyes have -0.75 diopters of astigmatism.
Some people with this prescription may manage everyday activities without glasses, but distant road signs and the outlines of objects may appear less distinct.
When cycling, clear vision is important for identifying pedestrians, vehicles, road markings, and potential obstacles.
For this reason, we used individually customized curved prescription lenses, taking into account the frame's curvature and the customer's wearing conditions.
The lens specifications included:
Specified Lens Curvature: Selecting an appropriate lens base curve to accommodate the frame geometry.
Optical Center Decentration: Positioning the optical centers according to the wearer's measurements and frame dimensions.
Back-Surface Coating: Reducing unwanted reflections from the inner lens surface.
Front-Surface Mirror Coating: Providing a reflective exterior finish while contributing to light management and appearance.
UV Protection: Helping protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet radiation during outdoor activities.
When manufacturing prescription sunglasses, the prescription alone is not enough.
The curvature of the frame and the position of the lenses relative to the eyes must also be considered.
In frames with a substantial wrap angle or lens tilt, the optical conditions differ from those of conventional eyeglasses.
Therefore, lens curvature, optical center positioning, and, where necessary, prescription compensation for the wearing position should be carefully evaluated.
These considerations are important for achieving comfortable vision with prescription sunglasses.
Front-Positioned Bevel Edging for a Precise Lens Fit
For this Oakley HSTN, we used a front-positioned bevel edging technique.
The bevel is the raised profile along the edge of an ophthalmic lens that fits into the groove of a full-rim frame, helping secure the lens.
In conventional eyeglasses, the bevel is often positioned near the center of the lens edge.
However, depending on the thickness and curvature of the lens and the construction of the frame, the bevel position may need to be adjusted.
For this project, we positioned the bevel closer to the front surface of the lens.
This allowed us to accommodate the relationship between the frame and the prescription lenses while achieving a clean appearance and secure installation.
Front-positioned bevel edging is not suitable for every pair of prescription sunglasses. The appropriate bevel position must be determined based on lens thickness, curvature, and the location of the frame groove.
Is the Oakley HSTN Suitable for Cycling?
The Oakley HSTN is a good option to consider for recreational cycling and everyday activities rather than highly specialized competitive cycling.
For cyclists who use folding bicycles to travel around the city or explore new places, its combination of sports-inspired design and casual styling can be particularly appealing.
However, there are limitations compared with dedicated cycling sunglasses.
Because the HSTN does not have a highly wrapped frame design, it may provide less protection against sunlight and wind entering from the sides.
During high-speed cycling or riding over uneven surfaces, the frame may also move or slip depending on the wearer's facial anatomy and fit.
For competitive cycling, long-distance high-speed riding, or demanding sports activities, dedicated performance sunglasses may be a more appropriate choice.
On the other hand, for casual cycling, travel, walking, and everyday wear, the Oakley HSTN offers an attractive combination of style and versatility.
Why Lens Design and Precision Edging Matter
Choosing the right frame is important, but prescription sunglasses require more than an attractive design.
Even with the same prescription, visual comfort may differ depending on frame dimensions, lens curvature, optical center positioning, and the way the sunglasses sit on the face.
For this Oakley HSTN, we selected custom curved prescription lenses and applied front-positioned bevel edging to accommodate the characteristics of the frame.
